Sunday, December 11, 3:00 pm
St. Agnes Church, 1 Word Ave., Red Lodge

Aoide Chamber Singers
Directed by Andrew Major

This extraordinary young a capella choral group from Montana State University in Bozeman has been received with enthusiasm and glowing praise wherever they have appeared.  Their high level of artistry and commitment to modern music invite comparison with other, long-established groups such as Chanticleer and the St. Olaf Choir.  Their performances routinely range from hauntingly passionate works of the Renaissance and Medieval chant through contemporary choral masterpieces.  Aoide is a dedicated advocate for contemporary composers, with a majority of their repertoire encompassing the last decade of choral writing.

Aoide’s 2016-17 season features a diverse concert series with appearances in St. Agnes Church of Red Lodge, Holy Rosary of Bozeman, and the Cathedral of St. Helena in the capital.  Early this fall, Aoide will be recording an album with Jereco Studios in Bozeman for release in the spring which will feature a work of composer Colin Britt, commissioned by the choir, which will be given its world premiere at their Candlelight Christmas performances.

The program for Red Lodge will consist of seasonal works to greet the holidays and the winter solstice—old and new, sacred and traditional.  One of the outstanding musical events of the year.

We're doing something different!
A UNIQUE MIDWINTER CONCERT
The Music of Bach and the Baroque

A wonderful time to relax after the Hubub of the Hectic Holidays, in a warm home setting, enjoying the music of another time.  Featuring an international ensemble who simply love to play the music of Bach and his contemporaries in an intimate room.  Performed on period instruments from the Baroque era–a Red Lodge premiere!

Baroque Music Montana is an ensemble dedicated to the music of the 18th century and earlier: Bach, Bach, Bach, Buxtehude, Handel, Telemann, and a bunch of Italians.  The group was founded by violinist Carrie Krause, who has collected outstanding musicians from around the world.  January’s all 18th century German program features Violinist Davina Clarke of London, Lutenist John Lenti (theorbo, lute, archlute, and baroque guitar) of Seattle, Washington and Bassoonist Nate Helgeson of Portland, Oregon.

The seating, in a fine private home near Red Lodge, is extremely limited, so get your reservations in early.  Tickets will go on sale December 1, but we will hold a seat if you send a note to musicfromthebeartooths@gmail.com or call 406.425.8922 stating how many tickets you need.  The price is an astonishingly low $30, so you can't afford to miss this wonderful concert!  There will be great music, delicious appetizers, international cheeses, lots of bubbly, mulled wine, coffee, and chocolates.

Program: Kegs of Counterpoint–Concoctions from the German Baroque
  • J.S. Bach:     Organ Trio in G,  BWV 530
  • G.F. Handel:     Trio Sonata in g,  Op. 2, No. 5
  • G.P. Telemann:     Sonata for Bassoon and Continuo

“Once Upon a Time”

Pianist Del Parkinson's amazing virtuosity is well known to audiences at the Red Lodge Music Festival.  Now we can hear him in a solo recital featuring works by Beethoven, Debussy, Chopin, Gershwin, Bernstein and Liszt.  Each of the pieces tells a story, thus the title of the concert “Once Upon a Time”.

Program
  • Les Adieux Sonata Op. 81a – Beethoven
  • The Sunken Cathedral – Debussy
  • Gardens in the Rain – Debussy
  • Ballade No. 1 – Chopin
  • Summertime – Gershwin

WE ASK YOUR PATIENCE; WE REGRET THAT THERE HAS BEEN A CHANGE IN THE TIME AND VENUE, DUE TO SCHEDULING PROBLEMS BEYOND OUR CONTROL.  The concert has been moved from St. Agnes Church to the Red Lodge Community Church, and begins at 2:00 pm in order to give you a bit more time to catch the superbowl game.  We tried to give the Superbowl organizers sufficient notice that they could change their time and date, but alas, they couldn't be moved.

The Muir Quartet is one of the world's great string quartets, and we are especially proud to present them in an exclusive engagement for the Billings-Red Lodge area.  This concert is produced in cooperation with the Montana Chamber Music Society.

This superb musical group is generally based in the Boston area, where they have become among most distinguished participants in the music scene there.  Their travels have taken them all over the world, but Western Montana has been especially privileged to hear them on several occasions each year, largely through the dedication of Montana native and alumnus of the Red Lodge Music Festival, cellist Michael Reynolds.
The Muir musicians have performed together for 35 years, winning acclaim from all over the world.  Among the prestigious awards they have received have been
  • 1981 Naumberg Chamber Music Award
  • 1980 Evian International String Quartet Competition
  • Grammy Award: Beethoven Quartets Op. 132 and Grosse Fuge
  • Grammy Nomination: Mozart and Brahms Clarinet Quintets
  • Two Grand Prix du Disque
